Enea (Ersan Elmasa)

Sunday, February 07, 2010 12:01:00

It was Thursday, twenty eight day in month of January, year two thousand ten according to Gregorian calendar when Elma, (Elma's) mom and I went to Opca (General) hospital in Sarajevo. Reason for our visit was, as Elma and I called it, 'term number two' for Elma's labor.
After CTG (cardiotocography - recording fetal heartbeat and the uterine contractions) test and mini hysteria of admiting nurse, which unnerved Elma, we came to doctor Drljevic. Doctor, satisfied with CTG results ordered amnioscopy (examination of amniotic fluid). Soon, he said: 'Water is ok, but placenta is getting old so we will do it today'. Elma and I looked at each other, I seized her hand (un)aware of the moment.
Even though I have waited for this moment long time, even though I have had feeling what doctor will say...I was stunned, happy, excited, and so much more...and I was pretty scared. Elma looked excited, happy and...and brave.
As procedure dictates we left Elma in hospital with bag packed at least month ago. Mom called Elvisa (her daughter in law) while I called my mom and grandma to inform them. Then, we started to wait for phone call from hospital...
Upon checking with mom I decided it was best for me to go to work. Of course, I did not do much there. Although, I must admit that going to work was good thing. My colleagues gave me strength for upcoming events with their humor, advices and understanding. Elma and I were on the phone most of the time and her spirit and optimism kept me at peace. Around two p.m. it started...

In screamy voice Elma said: 'Tell me something nice'. I will not write what I said as it was as cliché as it gets. I tried to calm her down, and I was not entirely successful...pain was stronger. Almost immediately I left work, went to pick mom up, and sped toward hospital. At the entrance Elma, this time incredibly calm, said: 'I am open more than 3 inches, be prepared!'.
'I am here, ready' I lied. I was not ready...pardon my French but even shit was dying in me. I do not know how much time passed and how many screams from Elma I heard before nurse called me. She put on med clothes on me rather quickly and showed me way to labor room.
I entered I saw Elma along at least ten med people with nurse Zlatka and doctor Drljevic leading the way. When Elma's eyes met mine I saw how much my presence meant to her. I saw her getting stronger! I put on my warmest and coolest face and approached my wife.
As doctor instructed I took Elma's left hand and slightly moved her head up. With each push Elma's face was turning dark blue with painful expressions. Couple of times she uttered that she can't push anymore while doctor, nurses and I encouraged her. Some fifteen-twenty minutes later I saw part of head and fast reaction of doctor and nurses as they flawlessly anticipated Elma's last push. Then I saw relief on Elma's face, then I saw Enea for first time. Enea was dark violet and had 'Eskimo' eyes. 'I can not hear her, I can not hear her' said Elma almost in panic. Enea did not cry immediately, she showed signs of life with slight body movements and two almost silent coughs.
Opca (General) hospital staff registered birth of healthy female baby weighting 4100 grams (144 ounces), 56 centimetres (22 inches) long at 3:35 p.m. Elma's and mine child. Enea...
